From Markandeya Puran it is known that King Surath belonged to the Kshatriya dynasty and was famous as an excellent warrior and a good administrator. His capital was in Bolipura, now Bolpur. He was extremely popular and a great devotee of Goddess Durga. He was never defeated in any war but Javan Raj ruler of the neighbouring kingdom was always jealous of him.

Out of enmity one day he attacked the state of King Surath and unprecedentedly King Surath was defeated. In such an opportunity, the ministers of King Surath and some members of royal family plundered his wealth and treasure. Being ill-treated and utterly ruined by near ones he got perplexed and like a bankrupt took shelter in a forest.

Wandering in the forest he reached the hermitage of sage Medhas. Receiving him cordially the sage allowed him to stay in the hermitage but the king had no peace in mind. He was always suffering from mental agony and was worried about his lost kingdom as well as condition of his subjects. One day he came across a person named Samadhi Baishya and came to know that snatching away all his wealth his wife and son had driven Samadhi away from home.

Samadhi was also a cheated person and like King Surath remained perturbed over the well-being of his family. They could not understand why they were worried about them who had ruined them two. The rituals performed during Ashwin month Durga Puja are not performed in the Chaitra month. But people keep fast on the Ashtami and Navami day in some regions. Chaitra is the last month in a Bengali calendar. Some traditional sarvajanik puja mandals and traditional homes still conduct important pujas during the occasion.

An important puja that is observed during the period is Annapurna Puja.
